The new school year is almost here! I hope everyone’s had a great summer, full of fun and (of course) practicing. The Piner directors have been hard at work already, preparing for both Piner and Sherman HS bands.

First, I’d like to welcome Mrs. Annette Mitchell to the Piner Band family. She’ll be the new head director of bands at Piner Middle School. She joins us from Plano’s Armstrong Middle School, where she had been head director for over 10 years. She and I have been working hard to keep up the momentum that we’d been gaining the past few years, and she’s ready to hit the ground running.

At the end of last year, I sent a letter home regarding Piner Summer Band Camp. This optional camp is the first time we’ve tried something like this, and we’re excited to get together and work on some music before school starts. The schedule will be as follows:

Thursday, August 13

1:00pm – 3:00pm – Rehearsal at Piner Middle School

Friday, August 14

1:00pm – 2:30pm – Rehearsal at Sherman High School w/ the high school band

6:30pm – 8:30pm – Movie night at Piner Middle School!

If your young musician needs a school instrument, we will have one to borrow – they just need to bring their mouthpiece. Woodwinds need to make sure they have reeds and other equipment ready to play. We will provide the music and the fun!

On Friday, we’ll meet at the high school and work on our music with the high school band. This will give the middle school kids a chance to see the high school band in action as well as see some of their 9th grade friends.

That evening, we’ll be watching a movie at the Piner MS Band Hall. We’ll provide popcorn, and the kids can bring other snacks if they’d like. This will be a great reward for the hard work they put in.
